The key modus operandi of the Korean painter Lee Bae is certainly gestural, which the artist himself refers to as “performative.” The spontaneity of his gestures on canvas, albeit ostensibly reminiscent of that of the abstract expressionists, is not the result of an “action” but is merely a final manifestation of the form that best describes the artist’s mental and emotional stage during the production.
